Yesterday morning I was reading Psalm 37 - one of my favorite psalms, when I noticed the fact that there were multiple promises and statements concerning the righteous. I decided to look at them in more detail, and meditate on them.
Here are some of them:
5 Commit your way to the LORD;
trust in him and he will do this:
6 He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn,
your vindication like the noonday sun.
25 I was young and now I am old,
yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken
or their children begging bread.
26 They are always generous and lend freely;
their children will be blessed.
29 the righteous will inherit the land
and dwell in it forever.
30 The mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom,
and his tongue speaks what is just.
31 The law of his God is in his heart;
his feet do not slip.
39 The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD;
he is their stronghold in time of trouble.
40 The LORD helps them and delivers them;
he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
because they take refuge in him.
Finally, I was reminded of Paul's writing concerning our righteousness coming from the Lord, through faith in Him. He wrote extensively about this in His letter to the Romans. In Phil 3:9 he wrote, "...not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith."
In other words, we are able to enjoy and claim the promises in Psalm 37, because of Jesus sacrifice and righteousness, which He extends to us, through faith. What an awesome God we have, providing in Himself, that which we could never attain!
Reflections from my moments with God - my daily personal prayer. Hopefully they bring life, healing and intimacy with God to you!
Note:
I apologize for any poor English or writing. This comes directly from my prayer journal, and at 5am I am not always the best writer, nor do I catch all my mistakes. However, I think Mrs. Hausner, my highschool English teacher, would be glad that I am at least still writing.

The Simplicity of the Gospel
Last night I was reading the Bible before going to bed, perusing one of Paul's letters. This morning, the Lord reminded me of the simplicity of the Gospel encapsulated in two verses, one I read last night and the other, a classic verse quoted thousands of times.:
John 3:16-17: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
- and -
2 Thess 1:8-10 Speaking of God: "He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might 10 on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you."
It really is that simple - God loves us and wants to save us. He has provided the the path to Him and eternal life through His Son Jesus. If we ignore Him and this Good News, we will shut out from His presence for all eternity. Not my words but His - through Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

When Trouble is Near, God is Nearer
This morning I was reading through Psalm 22 and verse 11 caught my attention - it reads, "Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help." What a common, heartfelt cry. So often when we are experiencing trouble, its as if we can see nothing else. We are overwhelmed, feeling separated and without help.
Continuing on to verse 24, David continues, "For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help." Not only has God not turned His back, He is actively looking at the person afflicted by trouble and listening to their cry.
In Isaiah 57:15 He says, "“I live in a high and holy place, but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite." Not only does he see and hear us in our trouble, He lives with us! And to quote Jesus in the Gospel of John 14:17 speaking of the Holy Spirit says, "...the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you."
You can't get any closer than in you! Lord, help me to remember that when I am in a place of trouble, feeling overwhelmed and apart from you, you are more than near, you are in me!

God's Overwhelming Answers!
Yesterday morning I was reading through Psalm 42 meditating on verses 1 & 2 which read, "As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?" I always liked these verses because so often my own personal thirst for God is evident and the image of my soul panting after God is quite accurate.
As I was thinking about this - I kept reading the rest of the psalm and came to verse 7: "Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me." I was struck by the connection between verses 1 and 2 and verse 7. Here the psalmist is praying for even a taste of water, of God's presence and God's answer is waterfalls and massive waves!
This started me thinking about how God answers our prayers and longings for His presence. Through His death and resurrection, He opened the way for us to have relationship with Him. Even more, He sent the Holy Spirit to dwell in us (1 Cor 6:19). We are thirsty for God and He answers by living in us, so that we have fountains of living water in us (John 7:38) and we should never again thirst!
His answer to this longing is so far beyond what one would ever think! Its like the difference between a drink of water from a stream and being swept over by waves and breakers, or the roaring water of a waterfall. I believe this is a great picture of His love for us, and how little we know of it. We would settle for a glass - He wants to give us the ocean!

When the World Starts Failing
This morning I was thinking about the present condition of the world, famines, financial upheaval, unrest and riots. As I was praying I read through 1 John 5:3-5 "In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome,4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God."
In scripture, when something is said three times - it means God wants us to hear this message and understand it - its very important! This passage has a clear message - as Christians we can overcome the World! We don't have to let the world affect us, drag us down into panic or fear. If we believe, if we have faith, if we stay in obedience we will overcome the world and its cares.
Jesus warns us of the coming unrest and turmoil and encourages us to stand firm in Matt 24:4-14. In verse 13 He says, "but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved"
As followers of Christ let us hold fast to God's word, trusting in Him, and resting in Him. Psalm 33:11 says, "But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations."
God is unchanging! We can count on Him, we can count on His word! No matter the present situation or circumstance - God is good, loving and faithful! We can lean on Him during these times, and let His peace settle over us!

Are There Pets in Eternity?
The recent loss of our beloved pet had me thinking this morning and I felt led to examine this idea more closely. Starting in Genesis 1:24-31 animals are clearly part of God's creation - and He considered all that He made good. In Genesis 2:18-20 God indicates that part of the reason He made animals was to provide companionship to man. I had read this before, but never saw the connection between God's creation of animals and the companionship we experience through our pets.
In several other verses God speaks of His care for animals - specifically Ps 84:3; Psalm 104:24, 27-28 and Matt 6:26. Clearly God cares for animals, and they are part of His creation. The Hebrew word translated creatures in Gen 2 - actually means breath, life or soul. This makes me believe that there is something unique about those animals that God thought of as companions when compared to the other Hebrew word that is used in Gen1 - which just means creature or animal.
Finally in Rev 5:13 it reads, "Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!” Here John clearly understands that there are creatures in Heaven, for all created things join in the glorification of Christ! The Greek word used in this verse - is translated creature or created thing - with the emphasis on the creator!
I find myself comforted by all this, knowing that God had purpose in creating our pets, that they are part of His glorious creation, and as such have a place in His final plan for eternity!

Thoughts on Salvation and Death - God's Sovereignty
Today I was reflecting back to the loss of my young brother-in-law, and reminded of the comfort the Lord brought to our family in that time. I was led to Eph 2:4-8 which reads, "4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— "
As I read this verse I was reminded of God's infinite love, mercy and awesome power. Multiple times Jesus spoke to the dead, and called them to life and relationship with Him. We are fully reliant on His great gift, His grace, to experience salvation. Verse 8 says it so perfectly - its by grace, through faith (which is not even from ourselves, but a gift of God) that we are saved.
It is God's choice who He saves! It is His free gift! He made us all alive, even when we were dead in our transgressions and sin. The timing of His salvation, who can judge? He clearly didn't pay the price for my sins right before I repented and gave my life to Him. He had paid the price for me and extended the gift of salvation to me before any of my sins were registered against me. I find this truth amazing and comforting... God alone decides who He extends the gift of salvation to, and He is the one who has already paid the price for each of us.
I kind of think its like paying for something before its ever created - like commissioning a new sculpture for instance - paying for it completely ahead of time. From the moment the sculpture is started, it is owned by the investor. When the sculpture is completed, its up to the investor to collect it, the timing of when and how is up to the one who owned it all along. There is no doubt it will happen, for the debt has already been paid, its just a matter of time.
I like to think this is how the gift of salvation works for us. We have already been paid for, set free from our debt of sin. Its only a matter of His timing that allows us to meet the one who paid our debts. I also think its totally possible that Jesus can speak to the dead and they can respond, for we, like them, were all dead in our transgressions and we heard His voice. Death is only a door to Christ for He has passed through and come back - He holds the keys (Rev 1:18).
Jesus, You are truly amazing and beyond all our abilities to comprehend!

Numbering Our Days
This morning I started my time in the Word, by reading Psalm 90. Interestingly this Psalm was actually written by Moses. Anyway, it was verse 12 that caught my attention. It reads, "Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom." Earlier in the Psalm Moses was talking about our lives being limited to 70 or 80 years, and how compared to God, this is as nothing.
I was thinking how true this really was - how our lives here, when compared to our eternal existence are so tiny, so seemingly irrelevant. Yet, our time here has great impact on our eternal existence. Jesus says in Matt 6:20 that we should store up for ourselves treasures in heaven, rather than on earth. Clearly, if we can store up treasure in heaven by our actions here, our eternal existence is impacted by our present lives.
Thus, if we gain this eternal perspective, we should rightly pray for a correct perspective on the brevity of our days here, and the importance of our actions, relative to our eternity. I think this is the heart of wisdom that Moses is speaking about in this Psalm. Our lives here do count in eternity.
Lord, help me to understand this reality and live my life accordingly.

The Starry Host
This morning I was reading through Isaiah 40 and found myself thinking about the reality of verse 26. It reads, " Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing."
Recently, I have been reading a few different articles about discovery's they are making concerning the stars and galaxies. A recent article was discussing a discovery of water surrounding a black hole that is 12 Billion light years away! I was thinking about how incredible it is that God created all the universe in all its immensity and complexity, yet He also created and cares for me!
If He cares for each of the billions of stars, calling them by name, making sure not one of them is missing, could He not do the same for each of the billions of people? I took great comfort in the fact that His power and love is so much greater than we could ever imagine, and that power and love is focused on me too!
What an incredible God we have!

The Valley of "Weeping"
This morning I was reading through one of my favorite Psalms, Psalm 84. I was reading it intently and saw something that caused me to pause and look deeper. What caught my eye was the statement at the beginning of verse 6. It reads, "Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.6 As they pass through the Valley of Baca, they make it a place of springs; the autumn rains also cover it with pools."
What caught my eye was that there was a definitive statement about passing through the Valley of Baca - which literally means the Valley of Weeping. Here is a great verse about pursuing God, seeking Him, entering into His courts, and it includes a visit to the Valley of Weeping, and its not an option.
In the natural, travelers on pilgrimage to Jerusalem had to pass through this valley, and it is thought to be Gehenna, a place of refuse, dumps, and graves. God clearly uses the natural to speak of the Spiritual. So what this verse is saying roughly translates to - if you have your heart set on pursuing and encountering God, you WILL pass through this valley of tears. However, this valley will be a place where you experience refreshing, God's provision, and continuing on to verse 7 - its part of the a progression of growth (strength to strength).
I was thinking more about this Valley and the Lord reminded me of the fact that pools gather in low places, and springs are revealed in the walls of low places. So rather than being offended or distraught during our visit to the valley, we should be looking for the blessings, refreshing and provision of the Lord in this place.

God Watches Over His Word
This morning I was reading Jeremiah 1:1-14 and my attention was captured by verse 12, which says: "The LORD said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled.”
I guess it captured my attention because the image of God watching over each of the words He speaks, seeing that they are fulfilled, gave me hope and encouragement. I imagine the billions of things that God has said, many of them just seeds, that He is constantly watching over to see that they are fulfilled - almost like a gardener tending is garden.
It gives me hope for things He has said that I haven't seen happen yet. It gives me encouragement that He remembers His words, and as it says in Isaiah 55:11, "... so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it."
This word also calls me to accountability for things God has spoken to me that I have either ignored or let flounder. He is watching over me, as I steward His word to me.
Thank You Lord for this word of hope, encouragement and direction!

Last Shall be First
This morning I was reading through Matt 20:1-16 which is the parable of the workers in the Vineyard. While reading this parable, I was struck by how effective this particular story is in grabbing my attention. I found myself thinking much like the early workers in the vineyard, that for the last hired to be paid the same as them was unfair. I could almost imagine the people around Jesus listening to the story, and feeling the same way, only to have Jesus turn the tables and teach them such an important truth about His Father and the coming reality of salvation, redemption, and selection.
It was a great reminder to me that everything I have in Christ is because of the love, generosity and sacrifice of Jesus and the Father. My relationship with them, my salvation, the forgiveness of my sins is all because of what the God did. None of this is attributable to me, or my actions. The only thing I have done is recognize my need for Him, and respond to His invitation.
I think that those of us who have walked with and served God for many years can sometimes develop a mentality that we have earned some type of recognition, or reward for our faithful service. We can even become jealous of those that are newly come into the Kingdom, especially if the Lord is blessings them and we are struggling.
Thank You Lord for reminding me that everything of real value in my life is from You, and that my eyes should be on You, not on me. You are so good to freely offer the same to anyone who comes to You. You don't require years of service, self denial or the likes. Anyone, whatever their situation or past can come to You and receive salvation, the forgiveness of their sins and relationship with you, even Eternal Life!

Unbelief and Healing
I was reading the NKJV (New King James Version) of Matt 17, and Jesus response to the disciples about why they couldn't heal the boy with Epilepsy, really struck my heart. Matt 17:20 reads, "So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief;..." Here is the only instance that I know of where the reason for someone not being healed is given and it is the unbelief of the disciples!
I was confronted by my own lack of results when praying for people, and had to admit that much is the result of my unbelief. As I was thinking this through, I felt the Lord confront me about how I am more likely to give people advice to try a cold remedy that is available from your local store than I am to pray for them, or suggest prayer.
I then remembered James 2:14, "What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds?" (NIV) I realized that this is exactly my situation. I say I have faith for God to heal, but I rarely pray for people to be healed.
Lord, help me in my unbelief, and help me to truly believe, in word, heart and deeds.

Less of Me, More of You
In my continued path through Matthews Gospel, I recently read the story of the Epileptic child that the disciples could not cure (Matt 17:14-21). Jesus last comment in verse 21 was a revealing statement about the difference between the disciples and Jesus. I have quoted here from the New King James Version : "However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting."
Normally I quickly pass over this statement, believing that I understand what it means, but today I saw it differently. As I was reading this and thinking it through I remembered John the Baptist's statement in John 3:30, "He must increase, but I must decrease." (NKJV).
Normally I wouldn't put these two verses together, but as I thought about it, I was convinced they are really saying similar things. Fasting is a way for us to be less concerned about ourselves and focus on God, and prayer is communication and intimacy with God. Thus, fasting and prayer could be translated less focus on me, and more focus on God.
In this story, Jesus clearly shows that His level of intimacy with the Father and emptiness of His own will is much beyond what the disciples have attained. This enables Him to minister with a level of authority that they could not.
Lord, help us to embrace this truth - less of us and more of You is what we need!

Love is God's Character
Recently I have been reading several passages that all have the same message - God is loving!
In Exodus 34:6 God reveals himself to Moses and comments on His own character - He says He is "abounding in Love."
In Psalm 145:13,17 David writes twice that God is "loving toward all he has made."
Finally in 1 John 4:16 John says simply "God is Love."
So often our world paints God as judgmental, angry, punishing, distant, etc. The reality was expressed most completely in Jesus - He is Loving. He sees the person's heart, hurt, rejection, sin and ugliness and still extends love!
Lord, help us to show more of Your Love to those around us!

The Keys of the Kingdom
Yesterday I was reading in Matt 16:13-20. Verse 19 reads, "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
Here Jesus is clearly talking about imparting of authority within His Kingdom. He gave this authority to His disciples, and we are included. A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the calling cards of the Kingdom, I guess you can add the keys to that list of things the Lord gives us as evidence of our authority and inclusion in the kingdom.
This is not some honorary key to the city that you sometimes hear, but it is real authority that extends on earth, and includes heaven. There are many commentaries about what the last statement really means. I'm not really worried about the exact meaning as I think the message is clear enough - we have real authority in His Kingdom - and His Kingdom extends over Earth and Heaven.
So, just like the first time our father or mother gave us the keys to the car, their expectation was that we would put those keys to use, and drive the car. In the same way Jesus expects that we will put the keys of the kingdom to use and walk in His authority.
Lord, help us to fully understand and embrace this great truth!

YOU are Mine
This morning during my time with God, I was reading out of my favorite Old Testament Prophet Isaiah. Is 43:1 says, "But now, this is what the LORD says— He who created you, Jacob, He who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine." I have underlined the section that caught my attention.
I have some quick thoughts about this verse, where God tells us not to fear, and gives us three reasons to support this statement:
1) He has redeemed us - that means he has marched into enemy territory and paid the price for our freedom, and brought us back to safety. What an awesome picture of what He accomplished through His crucifiction, death and resurrection.
2) He has summoned us by name - there is an intimacy and choice here - I imagine its like being selected for a team on the playground because He knows me and my character and wants me on His team.
3) He says "You are Mine!" I imagine this to be like one lover saying this to their mate - an intimate recognition of relationship, membership and love.
I think this leads perfectly to verse 4, which says "Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you..."
Thank You Lord for this great encouragement. Help me to truly understand the significance of these words in my life!

God is Good
This morning I was reading through Psalm 119 and I read verse 68 which resonated with me. It says, "You are good, and what you do is good; teach me your decrees." I love the simplicity of the first statement.
So often we, in our limited human understanding, don't see God as good or His acts as good. We blame God for things that are bad. We can't understand how God would allow bad things to happen to innocents.
Isaiah 55:8-9 probably explains it best, "“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. 9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts."
As much as we would like to understand God, or try to project our human ideas upon Him, he is wholly different than us. We are created in His image - but we are not duplicates - we are far from ever attaining His understanding. God in His infinite perspective and wisdom, sees and understands far beyond our limited understanding and perspective.
Lord help us to trust your word over our perceptions and ideas. You are good, and everything You do is good.

You Give Them Something to Eat
This morning I was reading Matthews Gospel again, and was meditating on the feeding of 5000 found in Matt 14:13-21. The title of this blog post is Jesus' reply to the disciples when they brought up the issue of the peoples hunger, found in verse 16. I can almost imagine the disciples response - one of complete bewilderment, confusion, and disbelief.
I think Jesus was trying to teach them more about the authority they had in the Kingdom of Heaven. He had given them authority over demons, sickness, death, and disease. He was now demonstrating to them that, as His representatives, they would have access to the provision of the Father.
I was reminded of two other verses while thinking about this. The disciples should have been familiar with these, and should have quoted back to Jesus, as they made their request. This wasn't a new revelation about God, but it was a new revelation about their abilities as followers of the Christ.
Ps. 145:16 "You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing."
2 Kings 4:42-44 - When Elisha feeds 100 men with 20 barley loaves and few heads of grain
How often, when confronted by seeming impossible situations, do we find ourselves limiting our thinking to the natural realm, where five loaves and two fish would never feed 5000? I believe the Lord wants us to grow up into people who can look at a nearly impossible situation, and see God's opportunity and desire. Lord help us to look beyond our means and see Your bounty and provision - waiting and available!

Kingdom Like a Mustard Seed
Yesterday I was continuing my read through Matthews Gospel, and read Matt13: 31-32 which reads: "He (Jesus) told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. 32 Though it is the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and perch in its branches.”
I have read and re-read this passage many times, yet while reading it this time, I felt like I wasn't fully understanding this parable so I decided to do some research. I looked up the verse on www.studylight.org and saw that several interesting comments and facts, such as:
1) The mustard plant that grew in Israel didn't grow into a tree, it grew into a shrub at most maybe 10 ft. tall.
2) The Mustard plant is not generally planted in a garden or agricultural field as it is a bit like a bad weed, once established it takes over
3) Birds don't particularly like to rest in mustard bush
After reading these comments, I had to think about what Jesus was trying to communicate about the Kingdom of Heaven to people who would have known these facts? I believe that He was commenting on the surprising nature of the Kingdom of Heaven as follows:
1) Not only does it grow quickly from a tiny seed, but it will surpass what anyone would think is naturally possible, becoming a mighty tree when it should only be a bush.
2) The planting in the field/garden indicates God's protection and care over the Kingdom - He will be watching over and cultivating this plant and protecting it because of its great value to Him
3) The birds coming to its branches talks of rest and refuge for all.
Lord, help us to hear what You are saying and embrace Your Kingdom. We want to be a part of the surprising Kingdom!

Times are Accelerating
This morning I turned to Amos 9 and was reading verse 13 - it says: “The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when the reaper will be overtaken by the plowman and the planter by the one treading grapes. New wine will drip from the mountains and flow from all the hills." Every time I read this verse it calls to mind supernatural acceleration of events - planting grapes and harvesting and treading immediately, plowing and replanting even as the harvest is still being collected.
I was reminded of a pastor I heard preaching on the end-times and preaching out of Matt 24:6-8 which talks about wars, famines and earthquakes, etc. In verse 8 Jesus says, " All these are the beginning of birth pains."
The pastor said the one thing about birth pains that is important to note is that they come more often and closer together as you get closer to the time of birth - in other words they accelerate! Looking just at this year already we have seen an incredible array of natural disaster, wars erupting in many places, and we are barely half way through the year.
Which brings me back to Amos 9 - the picture there is of a harvest accelerating and I believe that we will begin to see, and already are seeing, an increase is the harvest (people coming to God), as we draw closer to the end times. No sooner will the person hear the word of life (planting) than they will be ready for harvesting (salvation).
Lord we look forward to Your return, help us to be ready for these times of acceleration!

God's Heart vs. Religion
I am recently returned from vacation and celebration of 25 years of Marriage, hence the time off from blogging.
This morning I was reading Matt 12: 9-14 which is the story of how Jesus healed the man with the withered hand. I was specifically meditating on the question that the Pharisees asked Jesus - “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”
I know this question is about obeying the law to do no work on the Sabbath, but to me it points to an even more important point - do we follow the laws of religion or do we represent God's heart? One would think that answer to this question would be obvious, but the Pharisees prided themselves on living in obedience to the Law. Hundreds of years of debating and discussing the finer points of the law, such as - what is work as it relates to the sabbath - had apparently resulted in the whole purpose of the law being lost.
I was thinking about my own life and wondering if I have put the laws of religion before the purposes of God? Have we, in the church, lost our vision of what's really important to God or what is on His heart in our pursuit of programs or activity? Are we so busy Sunday mornings that we don't reach out to those in need?
Lord help us to desire mercy over sacrifice (Mt 12:7) and help us to see where we have put our religious practices before You.

The Calling Cards of the Kingdom
I've been really thinking about Jesus' ministry and comments in Matthew Chapters 8-11. Jesus primary message is that the Kingdom of God is here (near). For the people in Israel - a new Kingdom meant a new king, new rules, new laws and ultimately a new life experience. They had been under multiple kings, and nations, and the proclamation of a new Kingdom, God's Kingdom surely fell on attentive ears.
The question I've been thinking about is how Jesus and His disciples demonstrated the reality of this new Kingdom? They didn't have an army, tax collectors, a uniform or any other occupying presence. What they had was what Jesus demonstrated - healing every disease, curing blindness, the deaf and lame, cleansing lepers, raising the dead and deliverance from demons. He called his workers to demonstrate these (Matt:10:1) as the way to demonstrate this new kingdom was real!
In the same way, these are supposed to be the evidence in our day of the fact that Jesus is Risen, He Reigns as King, His Kingdom is alive and well in this day, and the Church is His Body on earth. This is how we are to know this is all real. Anything else is less than convincing.
When I go to work for a company, they give me shirts with their logo, business cards with their logo, tools to work with their equipment, and training so I know about their equipment. These are my calling cards - proof that I represent this company. In the same way healing, miracles, and deliverance are supposed to be our calling cards, proof that we serve the King, and His Kingdom with its new rules and new reality is indeed true.
I don't have to ask for these calling cards from my new company, they know that without them I can't effectively represent them. In the same way, I believe the Lord wants us all to be able to demonstrate the reality of His kingdom - we don't have to beg, or hope, or work for years to attain these proofs, because without them our representation of the Kingdom is less believable.
Lord, help us to fully grasp this reality and become better representatives of Your Kingdom to all those around us!

Are You the One?
This morning I was continuing my reading of Matthew's Gospel. I was reading Chapter 11 and focused on verse 1-6. John is in prison and wants to know if Jesus truly is the one he was sent to announce. He has his disciples ask Jesus, "Are you the one?"
Matt 11:4-6 gives us His reply:
"Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. 6 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.
In these verses Jesus is pointing back to Isaiah 35:5-6, Isaiah 61:1, Isaiah 42:7 all prophecies of the coming Messiah. In other words, Jesus says, 'Yes, I AM the one!" He offered clear and conclusive proof that He was indeed the Messiah.
Sometimes, when we aren't seeing the things we think we should see (John was expecting Judgement as well as blessing) we can lose sight of who Jesus really is, and need to be reminded again. I know that is true for me.
Lord help us to recognize who You truly are, and act on that belief.

Light Dawns in the Darkness
I was reading through Psalm 112 the other morning and I really liked verse 4. It reads: "Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for the Lord is gracious and compassionate and righteous." (Alternative Translation).
Since we are clearly in darkening times, I found hope and solace in this imagery, that light will dawn, no matter how dark it gets. Light will always dawn because of the character of God. He is gracious and compassionate and righteous and He won't leave His own in darkness for long.
Lord, help us to hold onto You, for you are our source of light and life.

Workers in the Harvest
This morning I was continuing my journey through Matthew and read Matt 9:35-38. "Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
This is such a rich passage, but my focus was drawn to the last line. A couple of thoughts struck me:
1) Its His Harvest field
2) He is the Lord (Master) of the Harvest
3) We are workers He sends out to Harvest in His fields
4) He will give us the proper tools and abilities to be successful, just like any other farmer at harvest time
5) He demonstrated what the harvest would look like in verse 35 - "proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness"
6) These are just the tools of the harvest, like scythes and rakes
Lord help me to have faith to be one of the workers you have equipped and sent into Your harvest field, and see an effective harvest.

Forgiveness and Healing
This morning while continuing to work my way through Matthew, I was meditating on Matt: 9:1-8, and verse 8 really caught my eye. It reads "When the crowd saw this (healing of the paralyzed man), they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority (to forgive sin and heal) to man."
As I was thinking about this verse, I was reminded of a verse in James. James 5:15-16. It reads, " And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16Therefore confess your sins to each other (forgiveness is implied here) and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective."
I know I have read through these verse before, but today the link of forgiveness of sins and healing was highlighted. In James, its clear that confession of sins to one another and praying for the sick person also involves forgiveness of their sins Vs. 15 "If they have sinned, they will be forgiven."
What an incredible gift the Lord gives us in providing a cleansing for our soul and healing for our body, all together. Lord help us experience this truth in our lives!

The Desire of Our Hearts
This morning I was reading Psalm 37 which has one of my favorite verse - vs. 4: "Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart." I must confess I have always like the second half of the verse - the part about receiving the desires of my heart. This morning I was wondering if the original Hebrew version means what I think of when I read this verse, so I decided to do some research.
In this verse the word delight - is the Hebrew word 'anag' which means to be delicate, to enjoy, find delight in, and be sensitive to...
The word that is translated desires is the Hebrew word 'misala' which means requests. It is closely related to the word 'saal' which means - to ask, to inquire, to ask intently, beg, or ask permission...
So, the verse could more accurately be translated - 'Take delight and enjoy and be sensitive to the Lord and He will give you those things you ask for, those things you seek intently, those things He has permitted you to ask of Him.'
This is not exactly the way I would understand it - as my focus is on my desires. This seems much more relational, much more intimate, and has more interaction. I think it reflects the fact that the more we understand and know the Lord, and enjoy Him, our hearts become more attuned to Him, and the desires of our heart flow out of that relationship. I think we have a good model for this in the lives of a married couple who are very much in love - the desires of their hearts flow out of their relationship with their spouse.
Lord, help us to learn how to delight in You in this way, that our hearts might become attuned to Yours.

Healed Without A Word
This morning I was reading Matthew 8:14-15 - "When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him."
I was struck by the fact that Jesus apparently didn't say a thing - He just touched her hand and she was healed. How different this is than most of the prayer for healing I have seen where we pray for several minutes or pray for people over long periods of time. Clearly there is a level of intimacy with the Father and availability within Jesus for the Holy Spirit to move in healing that most of us have not experienced.
Rather than being disappointed by my own lack of effectiveness, this verse encourages me to continue to pursue intimacy and availability in healing so that one day Jesus might heal through my hand without me ever saying a word.

God is Willing
This morning I was reading Matt 8:1-3 - the story about the man with leprosy.
1" When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. 2 A man with leprosy[a] came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
3 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy."
I was meditating on the fact that Jesus healed every person who came to Him. How great would it be if we could literally come to Him today - like this man did in scripture. As I was thinking this - I realized that we, as the church, have been called to represent Jesus to the World so that they can approach Jesus for healing, just as the man did in this story.
Lord help us to better represent You to the World. Your answer to the question - "are You willing" is always yes, help us to walk in the integrity, intimacy and power to demonstrate this to the World.
